Sofia Soria (English)
Sofia Soria, 26, is a lawyer, writer of the children’s book Cherry Merry, and the mind behind the Instagram account: @notasdesofiasoria. At her young age, Sofia has been able to meet many versions of herself that have taught her to be compassionate, authentic, and to see the light inside her and in others.
🌸 What has been your biggest challenge and how did you overcome it?
Dealing with a mental illness that loosened through a university course. I always try to do everything perfectly, and that’s not great for your mind.
I had never failed an exam in university and then I did so. I didn’t prepare myself enough based on my professor’s expectations. However, almost half of the class failed. So, to pass the course, I began to study every day. Monday to Friday for two hours. The course was about international public law and I became obsessed with reading about conventions.
On the day of the final exam, mine was the best. It was perfect. I knew everything and I’m not lying when I say that I was obsessed. At the end of the course, my professor told me that I had been the best student and that I had arisen like a phoenix. Those were her words.
Then I had dinner with my roommates at a Christmas party and I began to cry. My soul was asking for help. For six months, I had stopped hanging out with friends or seeing my family. I just studied, worked, and ate. I even dreamed that I studied and had deleted my social media.
I lived in a prison that I had built myself, and for the first time in a while, I was free. Those winter holidays I went back to my hometown and I couldn’t leave my bed. My parents said that this wasn’t normal, and it wasn’t later on until I found a psychiatrist.
After that happened, I told myself that I would never put myself in such danger. A course, a scholarship…they’re important but aren’t worth sacrificing my mental health. So, my biggest challenge has been putting boundaries to myself.
